Job Description

This onsite role leads marketing and communications for a La Jolla based Jewish congregation, coordinating storytelling across email, website, social channels, print materials, and events.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the weekly e newsletter and recurring member communications from planning through final distribution.
  • Draft, edit, proofread, and schedule emails, event descriptions, registration text, flyers, website updates, signage, and printed materials.
  • Build and maintain communications calendars for programs, membership campaigns, holidays, High Holy Days, school partnerships, lifecycle moments, and major synagogue events.
  • Support email marketing for programs, membership, adult learning, family programming, youth and teen engagement, Plaza Prayer, Shabbat and holiday experiences, donor communications, and community events.
  • Collaborate with clergy and staff to ensure communications are timely, accurate, visually engaging, and aligned with Beth El’s voice and priorities.
  • Promote the congregation as a welcoming center for Jewish life, learning, connection, and belonging.
  • Maintain a consistent voice and visual identity across email, print, website, social media, signage, and promotional materials.
  • Support marketing for signature programs, guest speakers, Shabbat and holiday experiences, adult learning, family programming, youth engagement, and community events.
  • Partner with clergy, programming, membership, education, youth, operations, and development teams to gather accurate content and set marketing timelines.
  • Design graphics and promotional materials using Canva or similar tools.
  • Coordinate with printers, designers, photographers, videographers, vendors, and outside partners as needed.
  • Maintain website content and event pages, ensuring accuracy, current visuals, and easy navigation; update copy, program descriptions, registration links, and event pages as needed.
  • Ensure public-facing information reflects current priorities, upcoming programs, membership opportunities, and community engagement efforts.
  • Manage Beth El's social media presence with a warm, professional tone; create, schedule, and post program promotions, community highlights, reminders, photos, videos, reels, stories, and synagogue updates.
  • Monitor social channels for comments, messages, tags, mentions, engagement, and overall presence.
  • Develop social media plans aligned with the communications calendar to support the congregation’s mission and programs.
  • Track engagement metrics and identify opportunities to improve reach and connection with members, prospective members, and the broader community.
  • Capture content at programs and events, including photos, short videos, behind-the-scenes moments, speaker highlights, and recaps.
  • Assist with in‑house filming needs, including promotional clips, event footage, staff or clergy messages, and simple video content for email, website, and social media.
  • Organize and maintain a library of photos, videos, graphics, logos, templates, and other communications assets.
  • Support storytelling around programming, guest speakers, Shabbat experiences, adult learning, family engagement, youth programming, membership, and community life.
  • Coordinate with staff before major programs to plan content capture needs, permissions, timing, and promotional opportunities.
  • Track deadlines and follow up to ensure communications are submitted, approved, and distributed on time.
  • Provide communications support during peak seasons, including High Holy Days, major events, membership renewals, donor campaigns, and community programming.
  • Help manage communications workflows so departments have clear timelines, expectations, and support.
  • Balance proactive planning with flexibility to handle last‑minute changes or sensitive community communications.

Requirements

  • Strong writing, editing, proofreading, marketing, and organizational skills.
  • Experience in communications, marketing, nonprofit administration, social media, content creation, Jewish communal work, education, hospitality, or related fields.
  • Experience managing professional social media accounts, including regular posting, monitoring, content planning, and engagement.
  • Comfort creating simple photo and video content for digital communications, social media, and event promotion.
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects and deadlines with accuracy, warmth, and professionalism.
  • Comfort collaborating with clergy, staff, volunteers, congregants, vendors, and community partners.
  • Strong judgment around tone, timing, confidentiality, photography, video, and sensitive communications.
  • Experience with Canva, email marketing platforms, website editing, Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, social media platforms, or similar tools.
  • Eye for clean design, visual storytelling, and member‑friendly messaging.
  • Ability to translate program details into clear, compelling, accessible communications.
  • Familiarity with Jewish holidays, synagogue life, Hebrew terminology, or Jewish community settings is strongly preferred but not required for the right candidate.
  • Experience with ShulCloud or similar synagogue database platforms is a plus.

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation will be commensurate with experience and scope of the role. Benefits eligibility follows Congregation Beth El policies for full time employees.
