Director of Marketing and Communications
Job Description
The Institute for Emerging Issues at North Carolina State University seeks a senior leader to direct its marketing and communications. The Director will shape and execute an integrated strategy that strengthens IEI’s brand and expands its influence on North Carolina’s evolving policy landscape.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement an integrated, multi-faceted communications and marketing plan to strengthen IEI’s brand, increase its impact, and position IEI as a trusted voice on emerging issues affecting North Carolina’s economic vitality.
- Define how the Institute conveys its mission, values, and insights to diverse audiences, including university partners, community organizations, philanthropic leaders, decision makers, and the public.
- Oversee the communications and marketing team and collaborate with internal and external partners, the University, and IEI affiliates across the state.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment or an equivalent combination of training and experience from an accredited institution.
- Five or more years of public affairs or public relations experience in government, nonprofit, or higher education sectors.
- Ability to independently prioritize and manage multiple projects with competing deadlines.
- Proven track record of managing, supporting, and motivating staff.
- Ability to maintain a positive attitude under tight deadlines and to enforce deadlines diplomatically.
- Experience in public policy and advocacy communications; excellent writing skills; experience in executive communications and drafting leadership messaging.
- Demonstrated budget management ability; creative and strategic use of digital and social media technologies.
- Experience in media relations, public relations, issues management, and social media management.
- Commitment to the ideals of a major public research university and adherence to branding standards.
- Knowledge of strategic communications planning, marketing, and advertising.
- Proficiency with analytics software (Google Analytics), website platforms (WordPress), Adobe Creative Cloud, and email marketing tools (Cvent, MailChimp).
- Valid driver’s license or reliable transportation to work sites across the state.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in journalism, public relations, marketing, or related field from an accredited institution.
- Experience in strategic marketing communications, public relations, and media relations.
- Knowledge of North Carolina issues and context.
- Experience collaborating with external vendors such as photographers and videographers.
Technologies

About the Department
The Institute for Emerging Issues is a nonpartisan connector that brings North Carolinians together across sectors, regions, and perspectives to address the state's emerging and critical policy issues. As a unit of North Carolina State University, IEI supports the university’s statewide research, service, and outreach. The IEI Marketing and Communications team develops and manages IEI’s comprehensive communications, marketing, and outreach programs to raise statewide awareness of the brand, boost visibility through digital channels, and execute campaigns that promote IEI programs and initiatives across the state.
